St Charles College, founded in 1875, is an independent Christian boys College situated in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, catering for day boys from Grade 000 to Matric with boarders from Grade 4 upwards. The College has written the University of Cambridge International IGCSE, AS Level, and A Level Examinations since 2002.

 

Design and Technology Teacher (Senior School)

St Charles College is looking to employ a suitably qualified Senior School Design and Technology Teacher, commencing 1 January 2024.

 

The College pursues its mission based on core values and our staff are expected to have integrity and exercise sound judgment in line with the responsibility of educating boys. All our staff must have an active involvement in the sport and extra-mural programmes of the College.

 

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Teaching Cambridge IGCSE and AS Level Design and Technology with the core focus being on Product Design and Resistant Materials.

  • Active involvement in the development of Design and Technology within the College.

  • Management of our Design and Technology workshop including maintenance of equipment, budgeting, ordering and control of consumables, and ensuring compliance with relevant Health and Safety standards.

     

    The ideal candidate will have:

     

  • A ‘design’ mindset.

  • A Bachelor’s degree, or an appropriate equivalent qualification, in a relevant field, including engineering.

  • Demonstrated experience in wood and metal working machinery associated with a Design and Technology environment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide range of applied technology materials and their usage.

  • Demonstrated competency in Engineering Graphics and Design, including the use of relevant CAD/CAM packages.

  • A professional teaching qualification (PGCE or HDE) or a willingness to study towards this qualification.

  • Possible industry experience working in a design and technology-related field.

  • Appropriate educational experience together with a sound awareness of international trends in education.

  • Knowledge of the educational needs of boys and their particular requirements for learning.

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and sound administrative ability.

  • The ability to work within the values, Christian ethos, and mission of the College and a willingness to participate in the broader life of the College.

  • Capacity and willingness to accompany boys on extension trips when required.
